ChitChat - With Teenage Joans

INTERVIEW BY: EMERALD VIOLET

Hi, thank you for giving your time to answer these questions! Over at Rawing In The Pit we love your music and huge congrats on the nomination for the SA Music Awards!

To start off the questions, and I promise it will be the only COVID question in this - How has this crazy outbreak that started at the end of July affected you guys in the way of touring and just overall being a musician?

It’s unfortunately affected us a lot. We haven’t been able to play any festivals this year which usually the winners of Unearthed High get to do as part of their prize. We’ve also lost a lot of shows and have had to reschedule our first ever national headline tour so many times which sucks so much!

What do you think has been a huge highlight of your music career so far?

Definitely winning Unearthed High 2020. It was such a chaotic day but so surreal! Also getting into the 2020 Hottest 100 was amazing. We were so stoked about it that we actually both got the number we came (87) tattooed! Supporting Amy Shark on her arena tour this year was also so incredible, we felt like real life rockstars.

Coming back to touring, what is your favourite thing about it?

Our favourite thing definitely has to be meeting everyone who supports us. It’s so wild that there are people that love what we do enough to come to our shows and sing the words we wrote back to us. We also love getting on the snacks when we’re on the road!

You released your EP “Taste Of Me” back in May of this year, are you happy with the overall response that you’ve received?

We are so over the moon with the response. People love it enough that they scream the words to us at shows and thats all we could have ever asked for! This EP has honestly changed our life and we are so glad that people can relate to it.

Can you tell us a little bit about the EP and where the concept came from and what those songs mean to you?

We wrote this EP in the first year of knowing each other and playing as a band. We played around 60 shows in 2019, we were playing every weekend and those songs are about the experiences we were having growing out of being a teenager and growing into adulthood. The concept kind of naturally formed when most songs accidentally formed from food metaphors, and it was so fun to work with food as a part of the visual side of making this EP.

Favourite song on the EP and why?

Our favourite song on the EP has to be Wine. It’s definitely our “coming of age movie” song, and we just love that it seems to be a crowd favourite too.

If you could play anywhere in the world with a band of your choice, where would it be, what band would you choose, and why?

We would absolutely DIE to play with 5sos. Literally anywhere in the world, we wouldn’t care if we got to play with them! They inspired bot of us musically so much, it would be the biggest honour to share a stage with them.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations when it comes to creating music?

We take heaps of inspiration from bands like 5 Seconds Of Summer, beabadoobee, Camp Cope, Mom Jeans, The 1975, and Blink 182. We both grew up on these artists and started really wanting to write our own music because of them. They also made us really want to be in a band, so it was so cool when we met and realised we have a very similar music taste!
