Globe-trotting indie rock songstress Anna Smyrk is curing the lockdown blues with a cheeky live video for her latest single ‘The Excavator’. Giving fans a glimpse of what is sure to be expected once the live music circuit opens up again here in Australia, ‘The Excavator' follows on the coattails of her previous single ‘Human Condition’ as the second track lifted from her imminent EP The Hour Between Us, scheduled to be released independently Thursday 7 October.

The video showcases Anna Smyrk’s quietly commanding stage presence and the captivating ease with which her music can evolve from a humble siren song to full blown stadium filler, in under three minutes. Anna’s wonderful lilting vocals are heightened by emotive strings, bass, keys and drums in a tight five piece set up. Recorded with Harley Stewart at Fight Night Studios, Melbourne by local independent production house Shoelace Creative, and mixed by Julian Abrahams, the video is a powerful display of Anna Smyrk’s seasoned songwriting and immense musicality.

“Producing this confirmed all the things that we love about making live music videos and the process involved at every stage. We squeezed an awesome band into a fairly cosy studio room and made them bash out a fantastic song whilst trying to capture the raw energy of the performance. We've been producing a lot of 'single shot' videos so it was nice to stretch our camera arsenal on this one.” – Julian Abrahams, Shoelace Creative

“The Excavator is probably my favourite song to play live from the EP, so I was stoked to have the chance to make a live video with my full band. We managed to sneak in an afternoon between lockdowns in Melbourne at the beautiful Fight Night Studios to shoot this.” – Anna Smyrk

Anna Smyrk has lived a life between places, spending time in Cambodia, the Solomon Islands, Belgium, Australia and the Philippines, and most recently working as a consultant for the World Health Organization. After recently returning to Australia following a stint working in PNG assisting with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, Anna is thrilled to be spending her hotel quarantine time preparing for the release of her forthcoming EP, The Hour Between Us which she describes as “a record about all the things that keep us apart and all the things that bring us together.”

Long-distance love is a recurring theme on the EP, with ‘Daylight Saving’, ‘You Break It You Bought It’ and ‘Song from the 36th Floor’ all dealing with separation and connection across time and space. First lifted single, ‘Human Condition’ is a frustrated commentary on a disjointed society, while ‘The Excavator’ explores the distance caused by grief. EP closer ‘Wallace Street’ rounds out the offering with a heart-warming story about finding love within the crumbling walls of a Melbourne sharehouse. With us in just under a month, The Hour Between Us serves a hefty dose of world-travelling vicariousness that we’ve all been craving in recent times and is destined to cure even the most stubborn cases of cabin fever. Get ready to be transported.
