"Honing in on emo trap...and painting some very dark stories. Totally and utterly addictive." - Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1)
"This Swedish artist is attempting to change the face of alternative music.” - Rock Sound
Following the release of his electric debut single ‘Warpaint’, Swedish newcomer Boy Destroy has shared a new track and video 'As Time Goes By', out now via independent record label Loyalty Obsession.
‘As Time Goes By’ sees Boy Destroy embrace raw vulnerability even further. Stripping things back, his confessional vocals and brooding lyrics take centre stage, supported by poignant keys and static trap beats.
About the new track he explains “On the surface, this song is about the day after a destructive night, with someone I liked, in a bed somewhere. A film from the thirties. And tender lies in the dark. 'As Time Goes By' is a temporary break from a life on the run. Away from upbringing, rules, religion and drugs. To cease movement and resign to the perfection of the present moment - give of oneself and get back. To look into someone's eyes when the car drives off the road but has not yet cracked the water surface. Total weightlessness. A safe embrace."
The melancholic visuals were filmed by Boy Destroy’s close collaborator Jesper Johansson, and details the pieces of us that we still keep even though life around us changes. Explaining more about the video, Boy Destroy says “My life hasn’t been a seamless string of events leading me to where I think I’m heading. It’s always changing and never takes me where I expect to end up. Even though I sometimes wish I could leave some things to rot in the ground, that is not how my life works. We are all ever changing and gain new layers all the time, but we still keep a piece of who we have been somewhere inside.”
“The idea of this video spawned from the meaning and lyrics of the song. We wanted to manifest the complex relationship that we have to our past. Some parts of our past we love and want to hold on to, others we hate and want to get rid of. Sometimes we need to throw both out, but whether we like it or not, it finds its way back.” Jesper adds.
Fusing elements of emo and trap with alt-pop sensibilities, Boy Destroy is making a name for himself with his trailblazing approach to alternative music. With only two singles under his belt he’s already secured support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders who after several plays made debut single ‘Warpaint’ his Tune of the Week saying “Boy Destroy really has a handle on big time pop music in 2020 with that real strong trap beat that glides over the top of the very lonely flux grunge guitar line. The lyrics are just stunning.” Rock Sound described the single as “a display of raw creativity and beautiful darkness that promises great things to come’”, and Alternative Press included him in their ‘50 New Artists You Need To Hear’ column, alongside further support from Upset Magazine and Bring The Noise.
Both ‘Warpaint’ and ‘As Time Goes By’ are produced by We know nothing, and will feature on Boy Destroy’s forthcoming ‘Warpaint EP’ due Autumn 2021. A visual mixtape of all four EP tracks can be viewed here.
