I was ready to fall / you weren’t ready to jump

really thought it was you / But it’s just my luck

So goes the anthemic chorus of Charlie Collins’ new single ‘Just My Luck’, from her forthcoming second album. Premiered last night by Declan Byrne on triple j’s home n hosed, the new release is a simmering document of heartbreak, self-discovery and empowerment.

As the follow up to her blistering guitar song ‘Fuck it’, Collins once again steps into dynamic new territory, tearing into a full-throttle race through a tunnel of heartache.

“It’s about the feeling of always throwing yourself in the deep end, but the other person isn’t there to catch you when you fall,” says Collins of the song, which she began writing in her living room with partner Mitch Sexty.

But it was a serendipitous moment of scheduling that took the track to dizzying new heights. A long-planned collaboration with Gabriel Strum, aka Japanese Wallpaper, finally manifested – landing the pair at Sydney’s storied Forbes Street Studios (which has previously hosted recording sessions for Billie Eillish, Ocean Alley and Flume).

Lyrically, the song’s a tapestry of experiences, in part drawn from the dissolution of Collins own relationship, as well as the experiences of friends.

“I related to it in a sense that I was in a relationship that I knew wasn’t quite right, but the thought of being alone was so much worse somehow.”

Ultimately, ‘Just My Luck’ is about acknowledging when something isn’t right, and the catharsis of discovering the strength required to overcome heartache and embody your inner power.

In April, Sydney-based Collins released the first taste of her second album with single ‘Fuck it’. Produced by Scott Horscroft with Joji Malani (Gang Of Youths) at The Grove Studio in Sydney, the track was spun on triple j, Double J and FBi and championed by the likes of Happy MagazineThe Music, Blunt, Women In Pop, NME, AU Review and Music Feeds. The single has been streamed over 150k times globally and was added to playlists such as Spotify’s The Local List, Indie Arrivals, Apple Music’s New In Indie and Amazon Music’s Australia Now where she graced the cover.

With 3.3 million artist streams to her name, Charlie launched with indie group Tigertown. She decided to go solo in 2018 and then the following year, released her acclaimed debut album Snowpine. The ARIA nominated and AIR award winning album, crossed music genres and included singles 'Wish You Were Here', 'Mexico' and 'Beautifully Blind'. Charlie has performed support slots for Sam Fender, Orville Peck and Gang of Youths with festival appearances at Laneway, Fairgrounds and Woodford Festival.
