Chicago-based metalcore band Capital Vices announce ‘Zenith’ EP to arrives March 19th
When it comes to deadly sins, there is only one group of musicians that fit the bill; the Chicago-based metalcore band Capital Vices (an alternative name to the seven deadly sins). The five-piece band is prepping a two-part astrology concept album. Set for a March 19 release, Zenith, the first of two EPs, explodes with the band’s lead single “Taurus.”
“Gemini” the EP’s second single found New Noise raving the song, “showcases intense syncopation, heavy dynamics, infectious melodies and sets the tone for the EP’s remaining five songs.” Some might consider the band’s ultimate sin--which made international headlines with Stereogum, Consequence of Sound and Kerrang, among others--performing in a Wendy’s fast food restaurant while touring through Tennessee in 2019. The band was on the road promoting their recent release, Exit Here (2018).
After their 2019 tour came the derailing pandemic that allowed the band to get back in the studio and lay the groundwork for Zenith. “No future performances at any venue or fast-food restaurant is in the works, but it's also not out of the question once shows are back on,” devilishly grins Avola.
Capital Vices--Avola (clean & unclean vocals), Matt Lathan (drums / unclean vocals), Rob Pelletier (guitar / clean & unclean vocals), Matt Wolter (guitar) and Matt Watkins (bass guitar)--gave more unwavering focus to Zenith than any other past project, including their two full-length albums.
“We have worked very hard to create better music structures and avoid the mistakes of this EPs’ predecessors,” says the band’s drummer Matt Lathan. “There’s a reason it took us three years. There was a group obsession to not let anything slide in terms of uncertainty. If there was even a shred of doubt about anything we wrote, it was worked out until we all were okay with what we had.”
The sophomore single, “Gemini,” continues the conceptual thread. “This song has an instrumental and lyrical pattern that relates to its twin aspect, as there are two vocalists sharing their side of the sign's pros and cons.” Lathan adds: “Gemini’s sign is the twins (twin personality). You might notice that the chorus repeats twice but has two different vocalists. This was to represent the ‘twin’ aspect of this sign.”
Zenith’s six tracks are named in relation to half of the astrological signs; “Aries,” “Cancer,” “Gemini,” “Leo,” “Taurus” and “Virgo.”
“We hope fans can enjoy the wild and diverse music and learn about the general aspects of different Astrological signs,” says Avola. “Astrology is important to people all over the world and this is our rendition of the Western version of it.”
“And for the record,” finazes Lathan, “the seven deadly sins was not the inspiration for the name of our band as far as I know. Capital Vices was something our former vocalist had heard, or come up with, in 2013 when the band was first formed. Just sounded cool as kids.”
Zenith arrives March 19 in line with the spring equinox.
