“The lo-fi production and distorted vocals, a bassline which steers the ship, and instrumental shifts during the course of this two-minute song are a great vehicle for the simple lyrics. It’s a craftily assembled song, no doubt about it.”

Wollongong-based surf-rock artist Duckboi has just revealed his eccentric new single ‘Going to the Beach’- produced and mixed by the artist himself and Zac Olsen.

‘Going to the Beach’ is two minutes of dynamic surf-rock, incorporating gliding bass lines, distorted lead vocals and a lo-fi production aesthetic which is unafraid to push into the bizarre and quirky. The track is in a constant state of flux as its structure surprises and astounds, morphing with each experimental push, leading to the finales striking key change and fade out.

Duckboi talks about the inspiration behind ‘Going to the Beach’:

I wrote this song spontaneously on our share house couch, just picked up the guitar sung the hook and that was it! Around the time I was listening to the Ornette Coleman ‘In all Languages’ Album, some of the more bizarre synth and guitar approaches translated to the song well. A song about quite literally just - Going to the Beach and not worrying about anything else- utter obsession.

Duckboi is the solo project alias of Wollongong-based musician Jack Lincoln (formally Ducks), who has shared stages with the likes of Dune Rats and The Vanns. Having received formal music training from a young age at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, Jack was inspired to experiment with complicated yet danceable rhythms, abstract harmonies and infectious melodies all under the guise of surf pop.

Taking cues from luminaries Tame ImpalaMac Demarco and Skegss, Jack soon formed the projects live lineup which includes Zac Olsen (Synthesizers and Vocals), Connor Daly (Lead Guitar), Nicolas Serray (Bass) and Kieran Parker (Drums). Duckboi will perform at Marrickville’s Factory Theatre with Safety First in March to coincide with the release.

In the coming weeks, Duckboi will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Going to the Beach’.
