Following the reveal of the stunning ‘Refracted’ short film, Gordi shares another compelling collaboration with Judith Neilson's Phoenix Central Park venue, this time in the form of a live EP Refracted: Live at Phoenix Central Park.
Gordi’s recent intimate solo performance at the incomparable new space in Sydney's inner city was recorded by production team VERSUS. The eight-track EP features alluring interludes and special stripped-back renditions of acclaimed Our Two Skins tracks, making for one of Gordi's most artistic works to date.
“It’s a genuine privilege to be able to play live music again as the pandemic rages on around the world. Tucked away in Chippendale in Sydney, Phoenix Central Park seemed an unassuming place when I first looked at it from the outside. But beyond the concrete door, there is this enchanting, arresting space.
On March 3rd of this year I performed there - it was just me, a harmonium I bought on Gumtree, a guitar, some noise-making things and a Fazioli. It felt like a church with one-hundred masked people sitting with me in silence. It was the day after Michael Gudinski had died. The show was beautifully recorded by Josh Craig and mixed by Karl Cash.
A heartfelt thank you to Judith and Beau and the whole Phoenix crew for letting me be in this space. Refracted: Live at Phoenix Central Park EP is out now everywhere.” – Gordi
The focus track ‘Sandwiches – Solo (Live at Phoenix Central Park)’ arrives with a visualiser created by renowned photographer, video director and animator, Justin Ridler. Ridler also directed the original video for Sandwiches, shot in Canowindra at the start of last year. The visualiser incorporates some of the original footage, with Ridler applying animation and digital filtering for this alternate version of the Our Two Skins favourite.
Gordi’s glorious second album Our Two Skins was unveiled in June last year and was warmly embraced by critics and fans, debuting into the Top 20 of the ARIA Albums Chart. Our Two Skins was nominated for an ARIA Award and two J Awards – recognition of the depth, intricacy and beauty of the album. During a chaotic 2020, Payten also balanced work as a doctor, assisting with under-staffed local hospitals in Melbourne during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She performed a debut, globally broadcast show at the Sydney Opera House and launched her very own VR immersive album experience titled Buried City.
This year, Gordi was finally able to tour Our Two Skins around the country. She also released the Our Two Skins (Remixed) EP, delivered an inspirational keynote address at the One of One Breakfast for International Women’s Day in March, and recently collaborated with fellow singer-songwriter Alex Lahey on ‘Dino’s’, which can currently be heard on triple j. Gordi recently appeared alongside a number of local artists at Music From The Home Front on ANZAC Day Eve. She will be joining Paul Kelly for a regional run of shows (around 16 dates) throughout July-early August.
