Dripping with raw emotion and radiating with a graceful strength, Perth-based alt-pop outfit Joan & The Giants are unveiling their most heartfelt and ambitious single to date, ‘Just For You’ (out September 10).
Captivating audiences with their fiercely powerful brand of indie-pop, Joan & The Giants have been standing tall since forming in 2019, collecting a reservoir of stirring singles featuring striking vocals, irresistible melodies and skilful storytelling, underlain with a folk heartbeat.
Front-woman Grace Newton-Wordsmith and guitarist Aaron Birch have been writing together for years, drawing inspiration from their personal lives and forming Joan & The Giants with the addition of bandmates Riley Sutton and Liam Olsen.
Now, the four-piece deliver a painfully important message in ‘Just For You’, a deeply personal track touching on poignant themes of mental health and loss, accentuated with stunning soundscapes and delicate delivery.
In the space between one breath and the next, the air swells with hauntingly lovely backing vocals alongside a subtle beat and melodic keys. Stripped back and raw, the delicate musical layers allow for Grace’s stirring lyrics to pierce deeply, delivered with her exquisite vocals, tender with heartfelt emotion. Uncovering an artist feature after the chorus, Perth singer-songwriter Lilia brings his rich vocal tone to the second verse, taking the reigns as Grace weaves in breath-taking harmonies, culminating in a show-stoppingly powerful chorus, cascading with vocal prowess, soaring strings and a raw, emotive strength.
Brought back down to earth, the bridge shines with a lyrical hook that slowly builds until the chorus arrives again in a showering of heart-wrenching strength, until Grace’s lingering voice is all that is left.
Written about the tragic loss of a friend, ‘Just For You’ is a love letter to people who feel like they have no one to turn to, providing comfort and an underlying hope that everything will be okay. Grace explains:
“I wrote this song for a close friend who lost her brother after our first lockdown in Perth. He faced a very long battle with depression, which tragically took his life. With a heavy heart, I couldn’t stop thinking about my friend who has faced many battles with her own mental health. I wanted to send her my love and tell her how precious she is to me, so I sat down and wrote her this song. Sometimes we all feel alone and disconnected in this world, and I hope that ‘Just for You’ can be a song to comfort people in hard times.”
