Perth indie darling Tanaya Harper releases new EP Montreal
“thoughtful and introspective... Harper’s voice can sail.” – Seesaw
"Tanaya's doing great things in her local scene and this draws on the classics in a great way!" – Declan Byrne, triple j
"You've got such a killer voice Tanaya, and the crescendo of [Bad Faith] chorus is top notch." – Zan Rowe, Double J
“Exuding the vintage vibe of 90s, 'Emma' has the hooky trimmings of indie rock and pop where the heart-pounding riffs deliver the rollercoaster of mess and madness one experiences by being their most heartbroken and hedonist version.” – Aupium
Nostalgic power pop conjurer, Tanaya Harper is excited to reveal her new EP, Montreal out today via MGM. Featuring the punchy 2020 single ‘Emma’ and woozy follow up, ‘Bad Faith’, Montreal also offers a B-side of live reimagined tracks from Harper's performance at last year’s Tender is the Night backyard concert. Tanaya is thrilled to be launching the EP with a hometown show at Perth venue Lyric's Underground on Saturday 2 October.
Covering themes of recklessness, recovery, exhaustion and elation that come with the territory of living with bipolar disorder, Montreal is a direct extension of Tanaya’s 2020 EP Slow Motion Breakup. The sister release continues to emit the same endearing elements Tanaya’s solo music has become known for, harking back to its predecessor’s moody alternative rock tropes and hazy pop melodies with brutally honest diary entry lyrics.
EP opener and first lifted single, ‘Emma’ is a lush dose of danceable catharsis, while ‘Bad Faith’ presents a shift in mentality, serving hazy bedroom introspection. The title track is a wandering ballad that begs the question ‘where now?’ and ‘Slow Motion Breakup (Part 2)’ offers a short and sweet postscript to its former half, finding closure as Tanaya repeats the mantra ‘I don’t want to see you anymore’.
Tanaya’s live recording of her favourite tracks 'Slow Motion Breakup', 'Don’t Go Outside', 'The Well', 'Dissociate', 'The Dark I Love' and 'Graceless' make up the Tender is the Night B-side, originally offered as a stand-alone digital release last year, with Tanaya Harper donating 100% of proceeds from the Bandcamp sales to assist Perth Bushfire victims.
Featuring fellow Ghost Care bandmates Beau Torrance on lead guitar and Luke Del Fante on drums, with Sara McPherson (NEW TALK, Ursula) on bass, Montreal was recorded and mixed at Blackbird Sound Studio with Dave Parkin (Jebediah, Abbe May, Spacey Jane) and mastered by William Bowden at King Willy Sound.
“Montreal is a little EP of four tracks that explore a six month period of a relationship; from deciding it's over, to partying hard through the turmoil, and finally, to realising that I have a fear of abandonment that I must address if I'm going to live a fulfilling life.” – Tanaya Harper
