Post-punks Plaster of Paris unveil new single 'Internalise' from long-awaited debut album
Melbourne post-punk warriors and cult favourites Plaster of Paris have today shared ‘Internalise’, the third single lifted from the band’s eagerly anticipated debut album Lost Familiar, slated for release via local luminaries Psychic Hysteria on Wednesday 23 June 2021.
Working with revered engineers Casey Rice and Paul Maybury, plus post-production by mastering wizard Nao Anzai, Lost Familiar is an album seething with intent, an urgent call to arms that addresses the timely themes of body autonomy, queer identity and climate emergency.
‘Internalise’, the album’s third single, taps into the familiar experience of conflicted emotions and unwarranted advice, with the track’s stop-start instrumentation see-sawing on the precipice of eruption before powerhouse vocalist Zec Zechner incants over a maelstrom of ragged guitars.
"A huge amount of people in this world can’t walk around without fear of violence," Zechner says. "So many people can't enjoy outdoor spaces, can’t walk home safely, can’t wear headphones at night, can’t be free to wear what they want and not get hassled.
"These fears become internalised, and we don’t even realise that we are avoiding spaces, mapping routes for safety and tensing our senses constantly. It’s emotionally draining to live this way, and the song tries to shine a light on this and the strength and determination it can take just to be outside."
The long-awaited debut from Plaster of Paris smoulders with the band’s frenetic energy and razor-sharp lyricism, with earlier album singles ‘Oh Wow’ and ‘Newcomer’ serving as ideal precursors for an album loaded with a fierce political bent.
Joining the core trio of Zec Zechner (vocals), Nicola Bell (drums, percussion) and Sarah Blaby (guitar, bass, backing vocals) is saxophonist Maddy Macfarlane and synthesist Amy Chapman (Double Vanity, Dumb Whales) whose dynamic instrumentation transforming Plaster of Paris’ angular rock to greater heights.
A regular fixture on the Melbourne gig circuit, Plaster of Paris have played with the likes of Cable Ties, Kim Salmon and Screaming Females (USA), and alongside MEN featuring friend JD Samson (Le Tigre/USA).
Lost Familiar is available now for pre-order via Psychic Hysteria.
