Melbourne-based R&B artist Will Clift has just revealed his heartfelt debut EP ‘Coast’ – teaming up with producers by Rob Amoruso (The Rubens, Sparrows, Jakubi), Julian Steel and Ben Oldland.
‘Coast’ is six tracks of compelling sun-soaked R&B, punctuated by Will’s effortless delivery and warmly textured vocals. The EP is filled to the brim with rich instrumentation and a feel-good ambience, showing his versatility in mixing both the soulful and intimate, to create a wholly engrossing collection.
Will talks about the process and inspiration behind ‘Coast’:
“The process of putting this project together has been a huge learning experience for me over the last two years. I’ve worked with so many amazing people and I’m so grateful for their help. The project is inspired by positive experiences and good times, so I hope it evokes those feelings when people listen. I think the EP shows my versatility and hopefully potential for the future. The final touches of the EP and both the music videos were recorded during the pandemic so there were definitely a few ups and down as well as improvising things last minute, but overall I’m extremely excited to show everyone what I’ve been working on!”
Opener ‘How’ envelops the listener with warm acoustic guitar plucks and earthy percussion, as the vocals of Will and featured artist Ash Kennedy delicately harmonise. Track two ‘Fall in Love’ flourishes with funk guitar chords, before the choruses burst with steadfast drums and sharp tambourines, giving the track a seismic lift.
The third track and latest single ‘Get By’ is a deftly produced slice of spacious R&B, complemented by muted bass riffs and soothing backing vocals. This leads into focus track ‘Red Heels’, a fast-paced track full of quick-fire vocals, entrancing falsetto and the sharp bars of hip-hop artist Strictly D.T.
Fifth track ‘Noosa’ features an amalgamation of organic percussion including bongos, cowbell and warm organs, also featuring the spray of rapper Kieren Luke. Closer ‘Letting Go’ is a beautifully arranged acoustic finisher, a reflective track full of endearing bell-like synths and reverberating guitar, feeling like an appropriate wave goodbye for the EP.
Will’s previous releases have been widely embraced by Spotify and Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, 4ZZZ, SYN FM, Radio Adelaide and Southern FM. The tracks have also received praise from online blogs Pilerats, Music Feeds, The Soundcheck, AAA Backstage, Something You Said, Sounds of Oz, Auspop and The Australian Music Scene.
