Following on from their critically praised single ‘So Real’, Brisbane-based electronic-soul group YesYou have returned with their evocative new single ‘Pray For Me (Only One)’ - lifted from the forthcoming second instalment of their mixtape series pertinently titled ‘This is Passion Pt.1’ (edit).
Opening with woody percussion, compelling synths and blissful guitar chords, ‘Pray For Me (Only One)’ is four minutes of deftly produced electronic-soul music. Driven by smooth bass lines and delicate piano chords, the song is an exploration of instrumentation and texture, showcasing Damon’s captivating vocals among silky string samples and reverb-soaked acoustics.
YesYou talks about the process/inspiration behind ‘Pray For Me (Only One)’:
'We had originally built the instrumental around a line from The Wild Angels, a 1966 outlaw biker film. The line was 'We don't want nobody pushing us around'. The progression we felt had portray both the sentiment of the line itself but also offer hope that things were going to change. When we found the new vocal it sat in the record in a similar way but provided a resolution which didn't rely just on the music telling the story'...”
Previous releases have been widely embraced by worldwide tastemaker blogs Consequence of Sound (USA), Clash Magazine (UK), The Line Of Best Fit (UK), Beautiful Buzzz (USA), EARMILK (USA), Stereofox (DEU) and Acid Stag. They’ve also received support from Australian radio stations triple j, FBi, 3RRR, 4ZZZ, 2RRR, Bay FM, Triple H and Radio Adelaide.
After giving away their 'This is Passion Pt.1' mixtape via Bandcamp the group have pieced together an edit of the release for DSP's. The EP will feature edits of records from the mixtape, a handful of new music as well as remixes from Brisbane's Spare Time Collective.
YesYou are currently working with Sydney-based designer Kris Andrew Small, who has worked with the likes of Nike, Sony Music, It’s Nice That, Adidas, Dazed and The Presets to create a 24-page zine to accompany the first mixtape. This comes in addition to working with Brisbane collective Spare Time who mixed and mastered the project, as the pair focus on building more of a community around them.
YesYou began in 2010 out of their parents’ bedroom and in 2011 released their first single ‘Half of It' which went onto to be the 11th most played song on triple j that year. Over the coming years the group went onto support the likes of Rufus Du Sol, Midnight Juggernauts and Neon Indian. While working with Jordan Rakei (Ninja Tune), Noah Slee (Majestic Casual), Michael Marshall (Timex Social Club) and Damon Trueitt (FKJ, Todd Edwards) the group landed 4 top 5 Hype Machine releases with 2017’s ‘Change is Going to Come’ hitting number one.
