Song Review - Slowly Slowly - 'Nothing On'

REVIEW BY: JADE GUIDA

Slowly Slowly. Slowly God damn Slowly. There is nothing slowly about the way this band captures attention. Slowly Slowly is an explosion, they are the most captivating band and every release they solidify why they are one of Australia’s most talented groups in recent years. Staying true to form and never disappointing ‘Nothing On’ is a powerhouse track. I waited with anxious anticipation to this track to drop. In recent years Slowly Slowly have cemented themselves as the number one band in my heart, ears and on Spotify. My whole spotify Wrapped was Just Slowly Slowly, I’m sure if someone looked at the metrics, they would think it was a genuine concern. So, I am always weary when a band I love so much is ready to release a new track.

This tune, is immaculate and yet not at all what I expected. That’s the thing about the strength of these four musicians is that while their sound is constantly evolving the quality of music is so high that it is hard to find fault.

Straight up, you may think this is a fun quirky summer tune. With its euphoric echoing and fast tempo. There is something lurking beneath the surface of this track, like many of the bands other tracks if you scratch back just a smidge of that shiny surface paint you are left with an emotional deep dive. The sentimental and emotional introspection delivered by the lyrics is beautifully delivered under the electronic pop sound.

The thing that stands out for this song (and across the discography) is despite it being almost like a personal monologue it is still so playful. There is a sense of fun and cheekiness. “Come round, I got nothing on. It would be rude not to play along. I’ve been waiting for so damn long, to see you with nothing on”.  This song is a banger.

About Slowly Slowly:
There’s an unshakable sense of comfort and resonance that comes with listening to Slowly Slowly. Frontman Ben Stewart’s vivid lyricism and emotionally-charged vocals douse swirling guitars and soaring percussion and prove the band as nothing short of striking storytellers. At any moment fragile and raw to boisterous and belting the next, the four-piece – completed by Alex Quayle (bass), Albert Doan (guitar) and Patrick Murphy (drums) – effortlessly capture real life and turn it into a rock song.

In early 2020 and 2021 respectively Slowly Slowly released their the two adjoining parts of their double-album effort 'Race Car Blues’ & ‘Race Car Blues — Chapter 2' to a tidal wave of success. Beyond gracing magazine covers and claiming Feature Album slots from triple j, Tone Deaf and The Music, the band enjoyed a rinsing on national radio and kicked off a string of sold-out Australian shows.

On the back of their most successful single to date, ‘Blueprint’ released in May and mounting critical and fan rapture ensuing, Slowly Slowly continue to stake their claim as one of Australia’s most vital rock outputs of late.
