Vanishing Point – 'Dead Elysium' - Album Review
REVIEW BY: EM VIOLET
Melbourne melodic metal band Vanishing Point are just about to release their sixth full length album and it seems ironic as this will be their first release in more than six years. Fans are certain to be excited as this 5 piece punch out the 10 track album Dead Elysium which is set for release on the 28th of August. Distant Is The Sun was the bands last album which was released back in 2014 and gave them huge recognition and set them out on a headline tour across Australia and New Zealand. As well as a headlining tour, in the past they have also supported bands such as Nightwish, Helloween, Dragonforce and even classic band Iron Maiden. After touring with bands as big as those, its no wonder these guys have a strong fan base and are well known in the Aussie metal community.
The album starts off with the title track “Dead Elysium” and it rips into a fantastic piano rhythm and then it falls into heavy guitar riffs. The piano chords are somewhat dream like and you feel like you’re being swept away to a fantasy world but then you’re met with the strong vocals and heavy guitars which makes for a perfect start to the album. “Count Your Days” is a combination of guitars with orchestral instruments backing behind it. The vocals are again strong , rhythm section is steady, lyrics are catchy and the riffs are great. If that’s not enough, there’s a sweet guitar solo towards the end of the track.
The third track is titles “To The Wolves”, starting with clean vocals and orchestral instruments underneath it’s a melodic dream. The vocals really stand out with basic yet effective guitars, fast drums and good lyrics. “Salvus” is a great start up with guitars and drums, when the instruments go quiet, the song focuses on the vocals and lyrics – definitely a slower song from the album but it’s one that is complete with the bass and drums underneath and strong vocals. “The Fall” is pure greatness as this tracks opens with a treat of a riff and orchestral goodness. Certainly a highlight track of the album as the melody in the chorus is very engaging and the guitar riffs are strong with a a good mixture of piano parts. The next track, “Free” is heavy and fast with the guitars and drums accompanying each other well. Some double kick drums and thick guitar strums. A simple track with a unique punch while “Recreate The Impossible” sticks with the same vibes as the last song it also has some female vocals in the second half which makes this song sublime.
“Shadow World” is a gloomy masterpiece from the guitar jabs to the symphonic sounds its guaranteed to give listeners chills. As we go into the last two tracks of the album “The Healing” starts off with rapid drums like a storm is approaching and with the kick of guitars we are blessed with the perfect blend of symphonic metal and then we are met with the final track “The Ocean” which is certainly a great track to finish off a great album, the melodies stand out strong and the vocals are flawless especially in the chorus. Overall, this album is a great comeback. Fans will be very pleased with every song on “Dead Elysium” as each song have immaculate instrumentals, strong vocals, engaging lyrics and juicy guitar solos. It’s great from start to finish and throws out some Nightwish vibes in the start of the album and then gives us the great Vanishing Point sound that fans love.
