Garage Sale Trail is back, and it's bigger and better than ever. For the first time, Garage Sale Trail 2021 will take place over three glorious weekends from 6 to 21 November, allowing even more people to sell, shop and learn about the circular economy. Australians can take advantage of easing restrictions with garage sales happening in the community or online through virtual garage sales.

To make Australia’s festival of pre-loved stuff even bigger, Garage Sale Trail is thrilled to announce it has partnered with five-time ARIA award winning entertainer and Aussie music icon Ella Hooper!

“I’m a life-long thrifter and I truly love shopping second-hand, especially for clothes. It allows me to have fun and get experimental with my style but importantly it also dramatically reduces textile waste and keeps a whole lot of quality stuff out of landfill.” said Ella. “That’s why I’m stoked to buddy up with Garage Sale Trail this year and help share the message of reuse far and wide! Hopefully everyone can fall in love with second-hand and reap the benefits - just like I have. Do the planet and your hip-pocket a favour!”

Garage Sale Trail 2020 extended the life of over 1.5 million kgs of stuff at over 10,000 garage sales across the country. A massive win for the planet, seller’s pockets and bargain hunting shoppers all over Australia.

TRAIL TUTORIALS

Weekend one, 6 – 7 November, will be dedicated to learning about the circular economy through a series of free online masterclasses, Trail Tutorials. Introduced for the first time in 2020, Trail Tutorials were so popular that the program has been extended for 2021.

A team of experts will come together from the worlds of fashion, styling, finance and sustainability. The line up includes fashion designer Kit Willow, 1 Million Women founder Natalie Issacs, Ella Hooper, finance expert Molly Benjamin, interior designer Adam Powell, master stitcher and maker Daisy Braid, and sustainable fashion educator and eco stylist Nina Gbor. Sessions will show you how to DIY your wardrobe, dress sustainably, make reselling a side hustle and more. They’ll also share practical tips for hosting a garage sale, both online and in person. Check the website for the full Trail Tutorials program and session times. And make sure you register early to secure your spot!

HOST A SALE OR SHOP THE TRAIL

Weekends two and three, 13 – 14 and 20 – 21 November are all about selling stuff you no longer need and snagging guilt free bargains with an expected million plus items up for sale!

This year, Australians can again get involved for free in Garage Sale Trail both online or in the community (depending on local restrictions). Whether you’re going virtual or IRL, after registering as a seller you’ll receive a bunch of tools and tips to set you up for success!

IRL sellers will receive free digital posters and social media images to help promote their sale, price tags and an all-important COVID Safe tool kit. While online sellers will get materials to promote their sale online and signage to decorate their home if they're streaming live. There are tips and tricks too from Garage Sale Trail ambassador and online super seller Danielle Goodwin AKA Hawkeye Vintage.

Garage Sale Trail is stoked to be partnering with PayPal to enable cashless payments at this year’s event. That means sellers with PayPal accounts can use QR codes for touch-free, in-person payments if selling IRL, and PayPal.Me payments on the world wide web for online sellers.

“We’re passionate about affordable, safe and secure payment options and we also want to help Aussies generate some extra income or find a second-hand treasure,” said Jess Rix, PayPal Australia’s Consumer Shopping Expert. “Sellers with PayPal accounts can use QR codes for touch-free in-person payments, and help Garage Sale Trail keep the circular economy turning during the pandemic, saving pre-loved goods from landfill.”

So aim big! If you're hosting a virtual garage sale you can host a sale as a livestream, sell in your stories or your feed and spread that circular economy love even further. You never know who might want the Furbie that comes to life in the back of your cupboard at 3am, your purple water wave taffeta formal dress or just the stuff you don’t wear that much anymore.

“Extending the life of clothes by just nine extra months of active use would reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by around 20-30% each.” WRAP
