ChitChat - With Kat Meoz Interview
INTERVIEW BY: EM VIOLET
How did you first get into music and when was the moment you realized you wanted to pursue this as a career?
I always could sing, I remember singing my first solo in a preschool performance. I started writing songs around 5. It was never a question for me if I would pursue this path.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating music?
Other people inspire, weather it’s a a specific situation that gives me ideas or just being inspired by someone else’s drive and feeling an internal pressure to keep going too.
Do you have a moment that you are most proud of as a musician?
My proudest moments are when I watch my music in film, tv or ads. It really feels validating when another company chooses my sound and voice for their product.
Do you have any advice for younger people trying to start out in music?
Believe without a shadow of a doubt that you have something unique and the universe will show up. And also, writing is rewriting, go back to songs and ideas you abandoned and rehash them.
Can you tell us a little about your new track?
Somebody Else came out of the frustration of feeling badgered to help other people when I am still figuring things out myself in this industry. Some people don’t trust their own process enough and the real truth is I’m not a mentor, or a teacher. I really have no desire at this moment to be one, maybe in 30 years I’ll think I can impart some wisdom on the youth but who knows what the music industry will even look like in 30 years. I’m still navigating it myself and I just have a hard time telling people I don’t want to help them because that feels harsh to me, so I wrote my feelings out in this song to help myself cope with that guilt.
What was the main inspiration behind this song?
A man that kept asking me for help, I did help him, but he just kept coming back for more and more, and eventually I stopped responding because I needed to focus on helping myself.
What do you miss most about playing live shows?
I miss meeting people after the show and making new friends. I miss singing live because it feels really good for me to share my voice loud, it’s really a spiritual experience for me. I miss my band and all the fun we have leading up to a show.
Apart from music, how do you keep yourself busy in times like this?
I work out, I improve my living environment, I binge tv shows I always meant to watch but never had time to. Mostly I do work from home on music tho!
Favourite thing about being a musician?
The gift of natural talent and knowing you arrived in the world with a skill that could be honed and bring others joy and relief.
What are your future plans? Releasing any more tracks this year?
Trying to get an original EP done this year with the same producer of Somebody Else, and working on lots of music for tv/film placements as well as original music for next years releasing. A lotttt of music in my head with a specific timeline for release. So so so excited for what’s to come I am sitting on some major bops!
