ChitChat - With Subcult
INTERVIEW BY: EM VIOLET
EM:
Where did the name subcult originally come from? Is there a meaning behind it?
SUBCULT:
Dec was writing an essay for uni, but I was really uninterested and constantly getting distracted. He was halfway through writing the word subculture when he zoned out then looked back and was like “huh that might be a good name for the band”.
EM:
Were you all friends before starting the band? How did you meet?
SUBCULT:
Well in fact, Ben and Dec met through a holiday program called Rock Academy. Ben and Lex went to school together, Adam and Ben were in a band together.
EM:
Who is someone that you would love to collaborate with?
SUBCULT:
Adam - It’s not something I’ve really thought about specifically tbh but honestly, I’d love to collab with anyone and everyone at this stage ahaha
Dec - Personally I would love to collab with Mat Kerekes from Citizen!
Ben - I would love to work with Alex from Columbus or Ben from Slowly Slowly
Lex – I don’t know who I’d want to collaborate with :((
EM:
What are the main bands that inspire your sound?
SUBCULT:
SO many. Slowly Slowly, Neck Deep, WAAX, Press Club, Ruby Fields
EM:
If you could describe the music you make in a few words, how would you describe it?
SUBCULT:
Adam - Fun sounds you should have a bev with
Ben - A cluster-fuck of different genre's
Dec - Really cool alt rock
Lex – High energy music
EM:
What is the thing you miss most about playing live?
SUBCULT:
Adam - Making people feel things by playing our music for them, feels kinda like a superpower
Dec - The atmosphere!! I miss being part of that. I love it, it was personally my whole life before covid so it’s gonna be great to have a little bit of that back for And We Are Live
Ben - I miss seeing the faces of listens having a good time
Lex - I miss feeling the adrenaline rush when you play the first note together as a band on stage
EM:
What was the best show you have ever played and why?
SUBCULT:
Adam - my favourite gigs were tied Crywank and the show at Helen’s place, Crywank because wholesome vibesx100 and Helen’s place cos it was rowdy af
Dec - Bakers Eddy show was so much fun. Every act on that show are mates and there’s nothing that tops playing a sold-out show with friends, especially with such a receptive crowd, at our favourite place in the world, Wrangler Studios
Ben – Ruby Fields or Bakers Eddy, too hard to pick between them
EM:
Tell us a little bit about the upcoming livestream event that is featuring you guys
SUBCULT:
We’re playing with Teenage Dads, Velvet Bloom and Boler Mani at Frankston Arts Centre on the 29th of October! It’s going to be a fun time, and it’s an honour to be included on such a huge line-up of some of the best Frankston acts.
EM:
What is the meaning behind your recent track “Suffocating?”
SUBCULT:
Suffocating is about someone who’s into someone and they’re not sure if they like them back, pretty much! The anthemic repetition of the word “suffocating” is also a subtle link to someone feeling lost for breath waiting for a call, text, ANYTHING
EM:
Can we expect more music from you guys soon?
SUBCULT:
Let’s just say that the livestream isn’t the only thing you’re getting on the 29th
