Single 'Undertow' Added to Double J Rotation
Starting the new year with a dose of indie magic, Adelaide indie pop/ folk singer-songwriter Naomi Keyte is delivering the promise of new beginnings and picturesque landscapes with the release of her inspirited new single ‘Gillian’ (out February 4).
Known for her divine folk-rich vocals and intimate homespun storytelling, Naomi Keyte has been charming audiences for more than a decade, in which she has achieved various career successes, including nominations at the South Australian Music Awards for debut album ‘Melaleuca’ (2017) and People's Choice Award (Folk) in 2020.
Now, Keyte is building up to the highly-anticipated release of her sophomore LP, starting with last year’s single ‘Greenhill’ followed by the newest track ‘Gillian’, marking the second single from the forthcoming album.
Simple and classic, ‘Gillian’ opens with a restrained but driving guitar line as Keyte’s warm vocals dances elegantly through the verse. Piano and guitar riffs add counter melodies as pulsing drums lead to the chorus, glistening with a coastal expansiveness.
Building to its transfixing apex, the track expands with layers of buoyant and percussive vocal harmonies. The song evokes anticipation and glimmering hope right up until the last piano note rings out.
Written during that magical, liminal period as one year becomes another, ‘Gillian’ explores the feelings of expectancy, desire and introspection that accompany the transition into a new beginning. Keyte further explains:
“‘Gillian’ was written driving with the windows down and the music blaring. It captures the anticipation and promise of the new year and that special feeling of being in the right place at the right time. The song describes the vast spaciousness of the coast as well as the closeness of the inner city in summer.”
Keyte’s previous releases have seen support from NME, Tone Deaf, theMusic, AU Review, Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, the AMRAP Regional Charts and more, with the artist having also performed with the likes of Paul Kelly, Aldous Harding, Ainslie Wills and Luluc, as well as gracing the stage of renowned festivals including WOMADelaide, OzAsia Festival and Latitude (UK).
Filled with well-wishes and sweet indie-folk sentiments, Naomi Keyte’s new single ‘Gillian’ is out everywhere on February 4 - the second single from her forthcoming sophomore album.
