Following on from their immensely praised release ‘Sentimental’, Sydney-based indie-punk band Down For Tomorrow have kicked off 2022 with their searing new single ‘Dark Comedy’ – produced and mixed by Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels, Crocodylus).
Exploring the heavier elements of the group’s refined punk sound, ‘Dark Comedy’ is permeated with minacious drums, distorted bass and invasive guitars. The dynamic contrast between verses and choruses denotes a skilful array of tension and release, while the alterable vocals highlight the track’s satirical qualities.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Cody Stebbings talks about the meaning behind ‘Dark Comedy’:
“There’s a quote I read in a book from a theatre-obsessed Augustus. Apparently, his last words were ‘have I played my part in the farce of life well enough?’ I’d like to say that’s what inspired the song - it didn't - but I think it nails the point. Life is merely a series of unfortunate occurrences, dramatic mishaps and ridiculous interactions. And in hindsight, it’s fucking hilarious.
We’re at the point where things are so incredibly bad that it’s basically a Monty Python skit. People I know have become so desensitised from calamity that the next repeated error can be laughed at as if to say, ‘I told you so’.
Laughter is the answer to chaos and darkness. And while there’s irritation with every obstacle that life throws at us, sometimes the best antidote is to find the hilarity between the cracks.”
To celebrate the release of this new track, Down For Tomorrow have announced a pair of single launch shows in Melbourne and Sydney in March, before they join RedHook and The Dead Love on the ‘Bring Ya Mates Tour’ in May, playing all shows except Perth.
Throughout their career in the live arena, Down For Tomorrow have sold out multiple headline shows and shared stages with the likes of Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly, Between You And Me, British India, Dear Seattle, Sly Withers, TOWNS, Eat Your Heart Out, Bakers Eddy, The Maine (USA), AS IT IS (USA) and The Dangerous Summer (USA).
Previous single ‘Sentimental’ was arguably their most successful release to date, receiving vast support from the likes of Spotify, triple j, triple j Unearthed, Passport Approved (INT), The Faction, Radio Adelaide, 4ZZZ, KWSS (USA), KRML (USA) and Radio Nobel Nueve (PER). It was also praised by NME, Music Feeds, Something You Said, Backseat Mafia, Punktuation, Underground N’ Proud (POR) and Tongue Tied Magazine (USA). The track’s music video was added to MTV Upload.
In the coming weeks Down For Tomorrow will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Dark Comedy’.
