ILUKA today shares her new single ‘Get Free’, an uplifting pop anthem for all those who are frustrated and want to throw the shackles off. With its bouncing, melodic synths, thumping heart-beat like drums and ILUKA’s soaring vocals, ‘Get Free’ really lives up to its namesake, offering listeners three minutes of undeniable and unbridled auditory bliss.
“I think it was a confession of the journey I've been on over the years. A celebration of the messy and long-winded route I've always taken - always a little left of centre and always in reach of something but never quite getting there, wherever 'there' even is. I think it was a way for me to find joy in that path rather than frustration and loneliness and in turn, to hopefully bring some kind of joy to the listeners.." - ILUKA shares about the track.
Produced by 2x Emmy nominated Aron Forbes (Billie Eilish, Finneas, Halsey, Banks) the arrival of ‘Get Free’ has been a long time coming for ILUKA, who had been living with the chorus inside her head long before she sang it to him late last year in a writing session. Within a couple of hours, the duo had the full song, and ILUKA had found her collaborator.
ILUKA says of working with Aron: “It was also a pretty special moment of finding my collaborator (Aron Forbes) who ended up producing my first record. It was one of those 'aha' moments when you find that person you know you're meant to work with - suddenly a new universe opens up. I can't wait for the world to hear everything else we've been working on over the last year and a bit!”
‘Get Free’ is released alongside an enchanting visual accompaniment, filmed on Gundungurra and Darug land in the Blue Mountains, a place very close to ILUKA’s heart. Directed by frequent collaborator Sophia de Vries, ‘Get Free’ is ILUKA most at ease; she is warm, vibrant and bursting with life.
“I wanted wide open space and vivid colours - that's what this song feels like to me. So, Sophia (director) and I worked on the concept and with the help of choreographer, Matthew Gode, created a visual journey of 'getting free'; of emancipating yourself through colour, movement, light and space,” ILUKA shares.
Director Sophia explains further:
“We wanted to create a visual journey that embodied the idea of feeling free. Expansive natural environments, vibrant colours and expressive movement. I was particularly inspired by the French filmmaker Eric Rohmer and the feeling of long summer days with no place to be.”
‘Get Free’ follows on from ILUKA’s biggest release to date, ‘Mess’, which features Australia’s indie-favourites Lime Cordiale. The fitting collaboration has garnered over 500K combined streams so far, and saw ILUKA play to a sold-out show at The Vanguard to celebrate the release, with special guests and close friends, Oli and Louis Leimbach.
ILUKA is putting the finishing touches on her debut album with more details to be revealed soon.
