Following on from the critically praised release of ‘You Know Somethin’ ft Kats, Sydney musician and producer Sonny Grin has just revealed his vibrant new single ‘The Rush’ ft. Rissa – produced by the artist himself, mixed by Casper Tromp and mastered by Klaus Hill (Set Mo, Paces).
The track features pulsing electronic beats, funky bass, and colourful synthesised chords which provide a suave underlay that allows Rissa’s soothing melody to fluently float above. Creative instrumentation spotlights a smooth chorus, rich in texture and vocals harmonies, as the song’s lyrical presence denotes an essential message about being here and now.
Sonny Grin explains the meaning behind ‘The Rush’:
“‘The Rush’ speaks about being in the moment, enjoying the journey and acknowledging the good times when they come. When I was writing this tune, I would close my eyes and think about the feeling of being a teenager on my way to a party, or at sunset pre-drinks with my closest mates. Those times, where you’re having so much fun at the start of the night, you almost don’t want to get where you’re going. We’ve become so focused on what we’re doing next, always rushing to level up and get to the next stage of our lives. This song is an anthem for taking a breath, smelling the roses, soaking up what’s in front of you.”
Previous singles have been supported by the likes of Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, Bay FM, 2XX FM, and 5GTR FM, along with online praise from Acid Stag, AAA Backstage, Le Visiteur (FRA), Happy Mag, and Electric Sound of Joy.
Coming from a musical family, Alec Brinsmead, alias Sonny Grin, is a multi-talented artist who is largely passionate about organic production elements, audience connection, and the origins of popular music genres. “As a dance artist, I have made an effort to research the origins of house, dance and also my main instrument – the drum kit – all brought into existence by black musicians,” comments Alec. "I believe that to contribute to a genre and push boundaries creatively, it is crucial to acknowledge how it is a privilege to even be able to play that music in the first place.”
In the live arena, Sonny Grin has sold out multiple headline shows, and has made appearances at festivals such as Lost Paradise, National Folk Festival, and Inland Sea of Sounds as a session drummer. He has also performed and recorded with Andrew Farriss of INXS, as well as local acts such as Mike Champion, ANGE, Oly Sherman, Kirrah Amosa and Cosmic Spice. Behind the DJ decks, he has shared stages with the likes of SAFIA, The Aston Shuffle, LDRU, Nina Las Vegas, Touch Sensitive, Mr Carmack and Young Franco. Outside music, he works with the John Skipper Kelly Fund; who help provide career and leadership opportunities for young people, volunteering his time to organise fundraisers and charity events.
