Trace Decay Reveal Anthemic New Single 'Surprised At Something' And Announce Debut EP
PRAISE FOR 'SURPRISED AT SOMETHING’
“From the guitars kicking off proceedings to the warm resonating vocals of Jordan De Pas chiming in, it’s all class. The harmonies offered by the other half of the duo, Jeri Karmelic are sweet and leave you wanting more.”
- The AU Review (AUS)
Following on from their critically praised single ‘Empty Handed’, Melbourne-based indie-pop duo Trace Decay have returned with their striking new single ‘Surprised At Something’ and announced their debut EP ‘Monstrous Subconscious’ – due Friday, December 11.
Opening with gliding guitars and dynamic drums, ‘Surprised At Something’ is a sophisticated cut of enchanting indie-pop. The endearing vocals of lead singer Jordan De Pas float seamlessly above the compelling instrumentation, exploding into infectious sing-along choruses.
Jordan talks about the inspiration behind ‘Surprised At Something’:
“This song is about exploring self-awareness and gaining a level of introspection into the dynamics that play out around you, both physically and emotionally. It comes from the point of view of someone who can see toxic and unhealthy dynamics playing out in their everyday life, leading them to brazenly call out the fake bullshit through a dry/witty lens.
The emotional turning point comes at the end of the second verse when that same person who is calling out the bullshit realises; they do the same things in their life. It’s a moment of introspection, clarity and acceptance of their own hypocrisy which allows the track to lift in insensitivity when the last chorus hits with the line ‘Who do you think you are?’, which is now redirected inwards instead of outwards. The track perfectly underpins the essence of Trace Decay’s lighter and tongue in cheek side of writing.”
Previous releases have been widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, 3RRR, 4ZZZ, Edge Radio, PBS FM, SYN FM, Radio Adelaide and Aussie Music Weekly. They’ve also seen support from online blogs Pilerats, NME, Music Feeds, Trouble Juice, The AU Review, AAA Backstage, Something You Said and The Soundcheck. Their recent single ‘Photobooth’ was even featured on the new ABC iView show Retrograde.
The two-piece have sold out headlining shows in their hometown and supported the likes of Art Vs. Science, San Mei and Shag Rock. When they aren’t writing pop hits you can find them either running music festivals in Queensland (Arcadia Music & Arts Festival), managing up and coming Melbourne artists (IJALE + Quiet Blue) or studying at university.
