HALF PAST TWO – ‘SHINE’ - Song Review
Review By: Maddie Kasyan
So-Cal has no short of musical talent in it’s wake, and genre-defying band Half Past Two is certainly no exception.
Take ska, mix it with rock, reggae, and insane vocals from Tara Hahn, and you’ve got fun toe-tapping bangers. The nine-piece group have been putting out original funky ska-filled hits for over a decade, and one that you definitely need to hear is their song ‘Shine.’ It’s their first single from their highly anticipated full-length album that’s set for release in Summer of 2021, following their EP ‘Something Blue’ released in July 2020.
The track had been previously featured on the ‘Ska Against Racism’ compilation, but the band has since decided to re-visit and re-release it as it’s a song that they hold dear to their hearts, especially lead singer Tara Hahn. She wrote the song around the time her family learned her daughter has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and upon realizing that writing and releasing the powerful track was incredibly cathartic, evolved the song to have more of the energetic sound Half Past Two are recognized for.
‘Shine’ is yet another groovin’, body movin’ hit from Half Past Two that showcases Tara’s vocals perfectly, with a strong message and even stronger story behind it.
They aren’t just another ska band, Half Past Two truly defies the genre and puts their own unique twist into every beat and every lyric. Watch out for ‘Shine (For You)’ on streaming services November 13th, 2020 – we promise you won’t want to overlook this one!
