If you’ve spent any time on tiktok in the past year you’ve almost definitely heard prom dress, the song that launched mxmtoon (pronounced ‘m-x-m-toon”) into popularity. This month she released ok on your own featuring Carly Rae Jepsen, and its a pop-princess match made in heaven.

The combination of heartfelt introspection and beautiful, catchy melodies contributed to the popularity of prom dress,  and mxmtoon has brought that okay on your own. While breakup songs are common, it's not as often that we get songs about leaving someone so that they can grow, which is exactly what mxmtoon has given us in her latest release. My favourite line is in the pre-chorus, “And I hate to leave you feeling all alone | but your story cannot start until you’ve grown”, mxmtoon has a level of maturity and self-awareness that usually is accompanied by more life experience than most 20 year olds possess (and I say this as someone who was very recently that age).

Premise of the video is relatively simple, the camera follows mxmtoon as she walks with her bicycle through the streets of New York (she’s wearing a mask of course), and is interspersed with shots of her examining her reflection in a large mirror outside. The homemade feel of the clip compliments the lyrics, and the combination of the words and the visuals were so effective in  promoting self-reflection that song ends before your thoughts can catch up. The only thing missing is Jepson’s presence in the video itself, but that can be forgiven due to current travel and gathering restrictions.

okay on your own is the type of song you keep on repeat while on your way home, and a very exciting look at what’s to come from mxmtoon.
