Petit Biscuit – 'Drivin Thru The Night' - Song Review
REVIEW BY: GEORGIA GRIFFITHS
French producer Petit Biscuit, aka Mehdi Benjelloun, has made his return with ‘Drivin Thru The Night’, the first offering from his upcoming album of the same name. Known best for his dreamy electro-pop beats, this is the first track to feature Benjelloun himself as the lead vocalist.
At just 20, Benjelloun’s music is often mature beyond his years, and ‘Drivin Thru The Night’ is no exception. It’s a classic laid back house track, with a tinge of tropical synths, but the depth of the production is what really makes it shine.
The track opens with a muted circling synth rhythm, followed by a driving drum pad beat and Benjelloun’s deep vocals. It’s refreshing to finally have Benjelloun as the lead vocalist on one of his tracks. While the floating female vocals of ‘Sunset Lover’ and ‘Memories’ are engaging in the same way as Odesza’s finest tracks, this track feels more energetic and driven, closer to Mura Masa, or Duke Dumont if he slows everything down a bit.
The last thirty seconds of the track sets the scene for the album to come through a conversation between two people, again reminiscent of Mura Masa on Raw Youth College. It’s an intriguing choice for Benjelloun, and points towards the possibility of a more story-driven album than his debut Presence. On balance, ‘Drivin Thru The Night’ is a strong lead single for Petit Biscuit’s sophomore album, showcasing his progression as an artist and showing that he doesn’t need to collaborate to create a great track.
