Single Review - GHOST - 'Hunter's Moon'

REVIEW BY: Peter Moreman

After two long years, Swedish hard-rock band, Ghost, have released a new single named Hunter’s Moon and it came with a music video to boot. Their last album was Prequelle and Hunter’s Moon certainly sounds very much like it takes inspiration from it. However, it is certainly a deeper dive into the supernatural and has digressed a bit from their earlier songs. What I mean by that is, it’s toned down slightly. The righteous hardcore metal that you generally hear from them, is dolled down ever so and instead we’re left with a much more theatrical or dare I say ostentatious track; which we know is because it has been made for the Halloween Kills film sound track.

Beginning the song with “It’s been a long time coming, I’m coming back for you my friend”, is apt considering how long it has been since we got a new song from them and the last Halloween film. And it really feels like they are back, even though it’s just one song.

Hunter’s Moon begins slow and calm, drawing you in and having you leaning forward waiting in anticipation. Finally, when the beat begins to drop, the theme reveals itself to revolve almost entirely around the undead and what you have relived coming back to haunt you once again (i.e. Michael Myers).

Die-hard fans would be rejoicing in the fact that we could speculate it won’t be long until their next album drop. It very much feels like them coming back and hopefully in a big way. What I quite liked, is you could completely distance it from Halloween Kills and I strongly believe it would work as a standalone song. Nearly everything about it screams Ghost. The lyrics are dark and gritty, and it still has their signature flair for the theatrics.

I will admit, it does have pop connotations. So, that could put some Ghost fans off but with Tobias Forge still at the helm, it still keeps its roots. I really like how this feels like it could be an evolution, I don’t know in what direction, but I’m very excited to see what the next year holds for Ghost.
