Song Review - Jewel Owusu ft. Mali Jo$e & Namesake' – UR NOT MY FRIEND

Review By: Camilo Piovesan

Have you ever heard of a song that is so relatable, thinking of some very intense friends you have struggled to let go of, not the good therapy a friend should be? Enter singer-songwriter of Filipino and Ghanian heritage, from Perth WA, Jewel Owusu, who wrote the lyrics in vocal collaboration with rapper Mali Jo$e and NAMESAKE and the song Ur Not My Friend. The new wave anthem that will give you the encouragement to end toxic friendships. Guilt Free.

This track has such a soothing appeal, blending in Mali Jose rap piece that easy on the ear, that you may think listening to this song is sending you the message that it is OK to stop being friends with people that do not lift you up and think only of themselves and not on you. That is Owusu intention, she does not want you to feel guilty of letting go of the toxicity and anxiety those sort of friends bring you, without regret. The use of musical water bubble noises and video game noises adds a dimension that makes the track unique.

Owusu sent a benchmark for herself by winning Triple J Unearthed last year writing with Methyl Ethyl, and has Apple New Music, Tidal Rising Artists & Spotify Editorials supporting. Look out for new music in 2022, as she puts her name on the Aussie Singer/Songwriter map.
