Album Review - Timothy Wolf - Self Titled

Timothy Wolf, Firstly, Thank You.

This may be my favourite release in 2021.

Timothy Wolf has dropped his self-titled album and it was everything I could have hoped for and more. This is the style and genre and music I live for. The wonderfully introspective soulful but wickedly fun music.

The album, overall, has a folk/country feel but with a punchy and non-traditional structure. Each song a delicate surprise. Timothy Wolf is like if The Punch Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show had a love child. Lyrically there is a complexity to the songs. There is love and longing and intricate thematic exploration throughout each song and the album as a whole.

Timothy Wolf has a voice you wouldn’t soon forget.

I was instantly drawn to his melodic and silky voice, it felt almost intangible, otherworldly – something you could never reach but would chase down the rabbit hole.

The opening track ‘Boogie’ is simply a fun time. It has a fun folk almost bluegrass sound with the pronounced electric guitar and brass instrumentals. The track is fun, energetic and a brilliant opening for the album. The song is really the White Rabbit that you see out of the corner of your eye. You weren’t expecting any part of what is presented to you, you are caught off guard but ready to explore.

The second track ‘Down’ is the White rabbit looking back at you and winking. You are already intrigued, and this track is gripping and the perfect hook. This song sets you up for the rest of the album. You start to hear more of Wolf’s tantalizing musical style and diversity. This track has some earthy references “sink or swim, the fire” and a more guttural vocal style through parts of the track. This is a nice addition to the album it highlights Wolf’s diverse writing capabilities.

The next two tracks ‘In your arms again’ and ‘Life is, better’ are where you start to follow the Rabbit through the woodland. There isn’t much to say other than these two tracks a masterfully written and produced. They flow beautifully and even while distinct in sound and theme they flow into each other seamlessly.

Now. Let me tell you. This is where I dove right down the Rabbit Hole.

‘Our Tomorrow’ and ‘Home’ would have had me follow the Rabbit that is Timothy Wolf to the Fae realm never to return. I was moved by these two tracks. ‘Our Tomorrow’ is ethereal and ‘Home’ gave me an overwhelming sense of longing. They piece together well with the rest of the tracks. Each song is unquestionably individual but perfectly fits with the other songs.

At this point in the listen through, I really didn’t think Wolf could have written anything as brilliant, as soulful and enticing BUT then ‘Foreign Throne’ played and if you didn’t already sample the Fae food that would keep you trapped in the magical place that was this album- you have now. This song is enigmatic and full of character. The greatest thing about this album is that you are pulled through this wonderful journey through wolfs musical style and lyrics. The penultimate track has an edgy feel, Wolf has created a sense that you are at the pinnacle of something, teetering on a knifes edge and waiting to see where the wind will push you.

The final track ‘Back to You’ is a blissful, sweet release.

The joy of this album is that it is unrelentless in showcasing Timothy Wolfs talent and musical style. This Album is refreshing, fun, punchy. Alternating between some slower tracks and more faced paced tracks the album is a true spin on Folk, string, Blues, and country.

Wolf has masterfully written an album that will leave you emotional and wanting more.

This came at a time where Melbourne welcomed live music back to its stages with thunderous applause.
