Devilskin - 'Sweet Release' - Single Review
REVIEW BY: MATT NEW
New Zealand alternative metal quartet Devilskin have released the 4th single from their most recent album “Red” entitled “Sweet Release”. This single is accompanied with a serious mission to draw attention to the struggles of mental Health and suicide.
After the tragic death of 21 year old Hamilton local Nicky Stevens, the band have partnered with Lifeline Aotearoa to raise awareness for suicide prevention.
“Sweet Release” tells the story of the aftermath of a suicide victim through the eyes of their parents coming to terms with the untimely loss of their loved one. The song itself is a carefully crafted and melodically powerful ballad that builds with a powerfully gradual crescendo.
There is a sense the band really bares their souls beyond the sonic tapestry that we are used to with their sound. Elements of musical influences of artists such as Nick Cave, Kate Bush and even Evanescence shine through creating a uniquely calming yet haunting atmosphere.
Coupled with this beautiful song is an amazingly cinematic music video. The visuals add much depth and purpose to the overall track. Symbolically the hardest hitting element of the video is the use the shoes possessed by children that are no longer with us.
Lifeline Clinical Manager, Renee Mathews elaborates “Music is a truly universal language and it helps people connect in a really meaningful way. We hope ‘Sweet Release’ raises awareness and starts a valuable discussion around how we can each play our bit in helping reduce our country’s sad statistics.”
A truly powerfully beautiful track that serves a great purpose to help those struggling in times of darkness.
