Song Review - Mirrors - Purple Static

REVIEW BY: PETER MOREMAN

It’s dramatic, it’s bold, it’s ‘Purple Static’. Mirrors dropped their newest album, The Ego’s Weight, and does it have some bangers! One of which is the aforementioned ‘Purple Static’.

For those who don’t know very much about Mirrors, they hail from Melbourne, Australia and are a hardcore heavy metal band. They were formed in 2016 by Patty Goodman (vocalist) and Tyson Taifer (guitarist). The rest of the band is made up with Jack Mackin (bass) and Rob Brens (drums).

The Ego’s Weight consists of 11 songs at around four minutes each. It has certainly been written and organised in a specific way. Mirrors, I believe, did it like this to take you on a journey, a journey of pain and bravery and I absolutely couldn’t get enough of it. All the songs were so well put together and didn’t fail to lose my attention. The transitions between songs themselves barely knocked you around, as some albums end soft and start too heavy, theirs was not like that. It flowed. I’m digressing too much; I could go on for far too long about The Ego’s Weight, so let’s get more specific, I want to tell you about the track ‘Purple Static’.

As I mentioned before regarding song transitions, it starts slower with a lot of emotions that build up more and more, until the beat absolutely drops. There are so many raw moments throughout, you can feel the pain of how someone has been hurt. A trust has been broken and the whole way through, they’re questioning if they should put their faith back in them and what it might mean if they do. Lines such as “Would you stop me sinking low? Or would you kill to see me fall?” bleed through Patty Goodman’s voice and when the song begins to end and he says, “Did you even care at all?”, the emotion is rich.

The carefully thought-out lyrics make it great by itself, but coupled with the low echoes of bass, the tempo of the drums and the chord progressions of Tyson Taifers guitar, it makes for a pretty amazing track.
