Song Review - The Big Heat - ‘Band Aid’
REVIEW BY: BEN LAMB
The Big Heat is the newest venture from Aussie music mainstay Dave Jenkins Jr, who’s played with such acts as Vera Blue, Daniel Johns, and Bec Sandridge to name a few. His personal work has also garnered a bunch of attention and critical acclaim too; releasing a slew of awesome songs under Not A Boys Name. Check out his track ‘Hazard Perception Test’ and see why he’s one of the most in demand musicians in the Aussie music scene. His new venture is The Big Heat, a duo comprised of himself and UK hitmaker Lucy Taylor, who’s written songs for mammoth acts like Dua Lipa and Ellie Goulding. The pair have just shared their latest single ‘Band Aid’ with us, and it’s truly one to remember. Opening with some laid back instrumentation and Dave’s vocals, the listener is immediately brought into the story being told.
The background bass and percussion then meet with some piano and other instrumentation for a catchy pre-chorus and chorus that’ll make you want to learn the words and singalong.
The unique storytelling techniques, and the ability to be drawn in is really reminiscent of old school performers like Paul Simon, an artist that this track was influenced by. We also get some stunning vocals courtesy of Taylor, whose unique voice is the perfect match for Jenkins production and music. Something that also separates The Big Heat from a bunch of other duos out there is that they seperate not only the lyrics, but instrumentation as well - with the pair sharing aspects of the track, with Lucy taking the piano, synth and flute, and Dave taking the guitar, bass and drums. This truly making the pair have a special chemistry that can’t be denied. It’ll be exciting to see what’s next from the pair.
‘Band Aid’ is out now.
