Song Review - wizard †ree- THE LAKE

REVIEW BY HARRY HARTNEY

Hailing from the desert of Joshua Tree, California, duo ‘wizard †ree ’have a wide array of experience in the industry, both working as producers for some of the biggest names in music right now. While maintaining some form of anonymity, the two have used their musical nuance to create a new and inventive sound that they have dubbed ‘The Wizard Stick’; a bass guitar that has been reformulated to transmit numerous signals to different amplifiers. This instrument really gives their brand new release, ‘The Lake’, an extra grungy feel.

Listening to this track with headphones for the first time is like being punched in the face in the best way possible. The opening riff fills like something off of 'Songs for the Deaf ’by Queens of the Stone Age, that simultaneously rocks and gives the song a sense of uneasiness. The vocals fill your ears, coiling around them in Alex Turner-esque fashion.

What stands out on this track is the guitar playing, with excellent improv runs that lead throughout the second verse until the closing notes. A ‘Wizard Stick ’dominated bridge almost shakes your room; you can feel the power this instrument emits through your headphone wires. Lyrically, ‘The Lake ’is strong, with highlights like ‘look into the void of my madness/riding the ripple of belief ’that herald the bands ’nature influence as a point of self-reflection.

The song’s dark-toned psychedelic music video adds a haunting atmosphere to this loud and in-your-face debut single. This video can be found on the wizard †ree Youtube channel.

Genuine musical experience is what seeps through this track, which the duo wrote, performed, produced, mixed and mastered. This treatment, which makes their music truly their own, is extended as a promise to all songs they will ever release. It is because of this that, when listening to ‘The Lake’, you can almost feel how much fun they had while making it.

As a way of complimenting the sound of the single’s dark themes is the release cover, a myriad of dark colours and a black and white image that calls back to other legendary albums like Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’.

With an EP, a new single and 2022 shows on the way, wizard †ree is a very exciting band that, with its ties, has the potential to make big waves come next year. ‘The Lake ’is available on all streaming platforms.
