Song Review - Missy Higgins - The Collector

REVIEW BY: ISABELLA URETA

This track is something much more different from the Missy Higgins I know, from her songs like that scar to where I stood. I feel this song has got a bit of a country vibe to it. You know country songs are always about love, cheating, the ending of relationships? Well this song kicks off like that. In her lyrics it starts off like “oh no you didn’t, you didn't just go there” and at the same time it's got that country kind of rhythm, cowboyish, outback, that beat that has you clicking your fingers and tapping your feet. Even going to like old time country rock, a bit of a western vibe, this song makes me feel that way.

This song has to do with a relationship for sure, I reckon anyway. Someone definitely was pushing her buttons and in this song she expresses that in her lyrics. This someone has gone and triggered some strong emotions. It doesn't sound angry, though she probably is, it's more like when she says “I got a memory like an elephant, honey I never forget” the way she is singing it, expressing it, brings me back again to that country vibe kinda music, specially when she says “honey”.

My favorite part is that drop kind of verse, you know like at the end of almost every song there's like a solo part , I believe it's called an outro, when the song is coming to its end, it basically slows down, and it's so pretty because you hear her beautiful voice stand out more and she's “like I got everything you owe me etched into my soul” That part is so more like the Missy Higgins i know, she's a beautiful artist, much loved by many Australians including myself, and I’m sure many more fans around the globe. She has a great voice, and always has those songs that hit you with emotions. All her anthems like this one always talking about life and in this case relationships frustrations, Missy is always talented, well played, well sung, awesome and powerful, and really enjoyed this tune.
