Song Review - The Bifters - Mary Jane

REVIEW BY: EMERALD VIOLET

The Bifters are a rock trio based in Sydney, NSW who are known for their new age rock sound and catchy as hell singles.

After only forming in early 2020, The Bifters have proven themselves to be complete rock gods with their pure talent/song writing skills and their unique sounds. Now, following up from their first single of the year “BWS” which was released back in February, the band are back and better than ever with brand new track “Mary Jane” - how could you not like it already with just that name alone - stoners would appreciate it. Not only is the track itself a full blown masterpiece but the single artwork is pretty fucking sick with it’s bright colours and imagery to basically sum up the track title. “Mary Jane” is a teaser from their debut album “Reefer Madness” which is due to drop on August 19th and will see the band take off on a huge tour to celebrate the albums release starting in September and will see the band hit up places like Melbourne, Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast.

Kicking it all off with a classic little blues lick that gets you excited from the first note while laughter plays over the top before a voice declares “I’ve got a date with Mary Jane” which is clever and adds a perfect layer to the song before the real fun starts. Filled to the brim with incredibly intoxicating rock and roll guitar riffs that will slowly wrap themselves around your mind and have them stuck there for weeks on end.
When the vocals come into play, it gives off huge Queens Of The Stone Age vibes/sounds and is a massive part of why this track is just so fucking good. Jared Howes (bass) does a truly fantastic job with the vocals and also with the insanely clever and well-written lyrics that are super easy to remember and I’m sure as hell everyone will be singing them at all the live shows. Underlying all of this goodness, how could I not mention some of the most important elements to the single - bass and drums - the instruments that literally keep everything together.

The Bifters are amazing at making sure the bass groove is there, it’s subtle but it’s definitely there and you can hear it as it undeniably swings through the other instruments and creates a strong and groovy foundation for the track while the drum beats echo hard, thoroughly, and loudly as they keep a solid and perfect tempo throughout. Everything just melts together to make an absolute solid and groovy rock track that I know you’ll love from first listen. The band have given their all like usual and let their song writing talent shine through strong on this one.
If you though this track is great, the band also dropped an accompanying video which is equally is good with it’s fantastic use of visuals and great shots of Angus Hart and Jared Howes playing their instruments while the video depicts Rory Wheatley decked out as the devil as he gives sweet Mary Jane a taste of his lettuce to let her rise to her full potential, Overall, the music video is genius and fits so perfectly with the track.

If you have never heard of The Bifters before, here is your chance to give “Mary Jane” a listen and fall completely in love with the band. From their clever lyrics to their bluesy rock riffs that are certain to grab your attention. You can stream the track now and check out the devilish music video below!

The band will also be touring around the East Coast in September, so make sure you snag up some tickets for that and go and give yourself a fun night full of good music and a whole lot of mischief.
